5 Lessons Learned From an Amusement Park

Like most people my age, I didn’t discover the joys of amusement parks until I had entered my teenage years. Through the peer pressure of my cousins I went on my first loopy roller coaster and I was hooked. Now decades later, my husband and I often enjoy a day at an amusement park and yesterday was one of those days.

As we spent the day enjoying ourselves, I realized that an amusement park is a good metaphor for taking on any sort of new challenge, even in the world of business. The skills you learn and apply during your day at the amusement park are completely applicable in a new business venture. Let me explain.

What a Garden Tour Taught Me About Long-term Goals

One of my hobbies has been gardening, particularly “low-maintenance” gardening. As such, iris have been a long time favorite flower for me.

When I moved into my current house, one of the ways I connected with the local community was to join the Garden Club. Decades before, my grandmother had been a member of this same club. Although we do talk about plants and gardening, for me the main value was to be able to connect with a small local community to which I was a stranger, although my family has historical ties in this area dating back well over 100 years.

5 Time Management Tips from Our Favorite Time Lord

Although I have always loved Sci-Fi, I only became a Doctor Who fan after the reboot 10 years ago. Since then I have discovered that Doctor Who not only knows how to manipulate and move through time, but how to manage it as well.

Even though his antics may seem like they are only about adventure, human nature and morality stories, there are also good ideas on time management and achieving our goals. I mean, in the end, his goal is always achieved, right?!?!

What My Landscaper Taught Me About Outsourcing

Over the past several months, we have been living in a vast sea of dirt. Our fenced yard is about a half an acre and we are completely remodeling our landscape.

As part of our yard remodel we have worked with a number of contractors including a builder, designer, landscaper, gutter installer, “cement guy,” outdoor lighting professional and metal worker. Not all of these working relationships have been stellar, but they haven’t been all bad, either.
